About our team
We are the Asteroids, team 14486 from Grand Rapids, Michigan. This is our teams second year competing in FTC. Our team is composed of 5 returning members of FIRST and 5 new team members. Many of our team members have been competing since 5th grade in FLL. Besides robotics, many of our teammates enjoy other activities such as softball, orchestra, band, football, gardening, art, and swimming. We are all great friends in school and work together as a team very well.
Our Summer Project
When our team volunteered at the Forest Hills Central FRC competition, we saw the Foley Freeze, team 910 using a drive-base most teams only joke about building, a swerve drive. We decided if the Foley Freeze could do it, then we could too. You might be wondering what a swerve drive is, a swerve drive is is drivetrain were each wheel on the robot is individually controlled in its own module that can rotate a full 360 degrees. This makes the robot extremely maneuverable but also very heavy and complex. We wanted to test this design and see if swerve was a viable option for FTC. We got our swerve drive design from team 9773, Robocracy, we used their PRINT swerve design.
